Born in Etobicoke to Irene and Bill Goode, Shirley grew up as one of eight children alongside her sisters Marion and June and brothers Bill, Jack, Roy, Bob and Bud. She was the last surviving sibling. Life on the family farm, growing vegetables and sharing in household chores, taught her the value of hard work. She treasured the close relationships she shared with her siblings, parents and extended family throughout her life.
On September 21, 1957, Shirley married her forever love, Bill Stoddart. Together they welcomed Lana, Don and Kelly and began building a life filled with family, friends and adventure. In 1963, they made the bold decision to move to Orr Lake, purchasing a general store, eight cottages and 150 acres of farmland. Shirley operated the Post Office and managed the cottage rentals, all while helping create a home where family and friends were always welcome.
Orr Lake held a special place in their hearts. The Orr Lake gang shared countless evenings of cards, laughter and impromptu house parties, where the music played late and the dancing lasted even longer. Friendships formed in their teenage years endured into their eighties, becoming so much more than friendships. To the next generation, these were simply their Orr Lake aunts, uncles and cousins.
Shirley and Bill believed in being part of their community. During their years at Orr Lake, Shirley devoted countless hours to the Lioness Club, giving generously of her time and energy to its many activities and causes. She also managed Elmvale’s first girls’ baseball team and was an active member of the curling club, serving on its executive while enjoying the camaraderie of the daytime ladies and mixed bonspiels.
In 1980, Shirley and daughter Kelly joined Bill in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he was working with Bell Canada. For a woman accustomed to doing things her own way, adjusting to the cultural restrictions was no small challenge! But she made the most of the experience, forming friendships and enjoying opportunities to travel to Greece, Thailand and Switzerland.
In 1999, Shirley and Bill made Horseshoe Valley their home, where golf, bridge and social gatherings brought another wonderful circle of friends into their lives. After Bill’s passing, Shirley continued to embrace the friendships and activities she loved, including the affectionately named “Widdies’ Club.” During these years, she also devoted herself to charitable work through the May Court Club of Barrie and supported the Seasons Centre for Grieving Children and the Elmvale Food Bank. Horseshoe Valley was home, and she wouldn’t have considered living anywhere else.
Shirley was the matriarch of her family—a woman of strength, tradition and unwavering values who influenced four generations. She took pride in her appearance, loved fashion and always seemed younger than her years. She was often the life of the party and quite possibly the last one to leave! Her roast beef dinners were legendary, and her devotion to family extended to caring for her parents and in-laws as they aged.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill Stoddart, Shirley was the loving mother of Lana (Joanne) of Cambridge-Narrows, New Brunswick; Don Stoddart (Deb) of Woodland Beach, Ontario; and Kelly Archer (Jeff) of Orr Lake, Ontario.
Loving Grandma to Scott (Katie), Rainee, Jazmin (Josh), Taylor (Shawna), Brooke and David (Dionne), and the greatest “GG” to Adeline, Lucy, Ace, Rosie, Jade, Axl and William.
Family was Shirley’s greatest joy, and each new generation brought even more love, laughter and happiness into her life.
Shirley had places she wanted to go, things she wanted to do and people she wanted to be there for. She wasn’t one to sit on the sidelines.
Her greatest legacy is the family she loved so deeply. Across four generations, Shirley passed along her strength, determination, traditions and unwavering sense of family. Her influence will continue to be felt in the lives they lead, the values they share and the memories they carry forward.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Lynn-Stone Funeral Home. In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Shirley’s wonderful life on Friday, October 30, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Heights of Horseshoe, 1106 Horseshoe Valley Road West, Barrie, Ontario.
