Passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Hospice Simcoe, Barrie on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Sandy in her 80th year, was the beloved wife of Ray McElwain for over 61 years. Dear mother of Greg (Janice) McElwain, Russell (Heidi) McElwain, Kim (Jim) Rettinger, and Troy (Colleen) McElwain. Grandmother of Chris, Scott, Justin, Adam, Kyle, Will, Matt, Lauren, Katie, and Megan. Great-Grandmother of Declan, Keira, Liam, Camryn, Hayden, Emilia, Wren, Henry, and Emerson.
Sandy is survived by her sisters Mary Stone (the late Pat), Bonnie Marson (Rod), Bev Farrell (Herb), Jan Ritchie and Cathy Ritchie-Kerr (Stu). Predeceased by her brothers Herb (June) and Bob (the late Clara, Joanne). She will be greatly missed by her many brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.
Sandy was the heart of the family, and it was the thing that she was most proud of. She loved to bake and cook, ensuring that everyone got to enjoy their favourites at gatherings and special occasions. She was often the first phone call for both the Ritchies and the McElwains when anyone needed advice, support and encouragement. Her calming presence will be greatly missed.
Sandy was a very social person and loved interacting with the public in her positions as a retail clerk at Osborne’s Castle of Gifts and then Nicholyn Farms. Being able to chat with the customers was often the highlight of her time at work.
Ray and the family would like to recognize the outstanding care Sandy received over the past several months from the staff at RVH, Home Care, ProResp and Hospice Simcoe. The family will forever be grateful for the compassion, care and support shown by Dr. O’Halloran and Dr. Ward-Able.
Memorial donations in Sandy’s memory to Hospice Simcoe, the Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice would be very much appreciated.
